Sad Day

Yesterday was a shocking sad day for our American friends.

(and we all need to remember - I think - that we are all one nutcase leader away from the same thing)

  1. I just can't believe the goings on State side. Thoughts go out to our American friends

  3. It's a mess out there, I can't imagine how our State side friends must be feeling. Reading the news is kinda depressing right now. I just wait for BIKSS (or my mum) to point out the headlines to me.

  4. I can tell you this friend is shocked, stunned, incredulous - I could keep going. So many of us saw this coming since before the 2016 election. But it felt like a wave coming and despite all we said nothing was done to stop it - him. I'm sickened. We'll recover, but there will always be a nasty scar.

I promised myself last night that I would put my feeling out where ever I could. I have posted on many comments in the past and this is a good place to go. I read daily. I am a Proud American. I did vote for Donald Trump twice. But today I can honestly state that the "normal" Republican is just as angry, just as appalled and just as saddened by yesterdays events. This is unacceptable behavior. Joe Biden is my president and I will respect and accept him and pray he can bring this nation back to its glory. Please if you can all just understand, the majority of Republicans are just as upset by this as everyone else in the world.

Anonymous - As another American, I will say this to you. Anyone who supported and voted for Trump - knowing who he is - is complicit in the horror that took place yesterday in our nation's Capitol. You don't get to talk out of both sides of your mouth. You cast your vote for him twice. Shame on you.

  8. I think, Morningstar, that this is where I disagree with you (what you said about being one nutcase leader away from the same thing). While I'm not disagreeing with you about your description of Trump I think what we have GOT to recognise, everyone who lives in a democracy, and especially in the west - that your vote matters and that ALL of us have to hold our leaders accountable. What is going on in America now has been coming for a long time. It's important that we recognise that Trump is not an isolation, not an abberation. There are many people who have supported him, who support him BECAUSE of the ugly politics that he espouses, and we in the west have got to deal with the underlying causes that make people cleave to these ugly politics. Its too easy to dismiss Trump supporters as extremist or stupid (or other adjectives). They hold those views for a reason and we have to recognise and understand and deal with the underlying causes. Until we do we will continue to be vulnerable to demagogue politics and authoritiarian politicians. We got lucky with Trump - yes, LUCKY! He has made several mistakes. But there are other politicians watching Trump, watching reactions to his behaviour and tactics, and learning from them. If we don't learn as well, then the next time we may not be so fortunate.

  9. Keth -- good points and I don't disagree with you. My comment about being one nutcase leader away was to make the point that none of us can point fingers... there is discontent in every country.... and we ALL have a lot of work to do ......
